چکیده

Initial adherence to host cells is the first step of the infection of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC), enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) and verotoxigenic Escherichia coli (VTEC) strains. The importance of this step in the infection resides in the fact that (1) adherence is the first contact between bacteria and intestinal cells without which the other steps cannot occur and (2) adherence is the basis of host specificity for a lot of pathogens. This review describes the initial adhesins of the EPEC, EHEC and VTEC strains. During the last few years, several new adhesins and putative colonisation factors have been described, especially in EHEC strains. Only a few adhesins (BfpA, AF/R1, AF/R2, Ral, F18 adhesins) appear to be host and pathotype specific. The others are found in more than one species and/or pathotype (EPEC, EHEC, VTEC). Initial adherence of EPEC, EHEC and VTEC strains to host cells is probably mediated by multiple mechanisms.

Comparison between a bovine and a human enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli strain of serogroup O26 by suppressive subtractive hybridization reveals the presence of atypical factors in EHEC and EPEC strains.

Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) strains are responsible for food poisoning in humans in developed countries via consumption of vegetal and animal foodstuffs contaminated by ruminant feces. The clinical conditions caused by EHEC strains vary from undifferentiated diarrhea to hemorrhagic colitis with, in a few cases, the appearance of the hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can lead to de...

Plasmid and chromosomal elements involved in the pathogenesis of attaching and effacing Escherichia coli.

Attaching and effacing (A/E) intestinal lesions are produced by enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC), enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC), and RDEC-1, a pathogen of weanling rabbits. We recently identified a chromosomal locus (eae[E. coli A/E]) which is required for A/E activity in a wild-type EPEC strain. Sequences homologous to those of an eae gene probe were detected in EPEC, RDEC-1, and EH...

Core 2 mucin-type O-glycan inhibits EPEC or EHEC O157:H7 invasion into HT-29 epithelial cells

BACKGROUND How host cell glycosylation affects EPEC or EHEC O157:H7 invasion is unclear. This study investigated whether and how O-glycans were involved in EPEC or EHEC O157:H7 invasion into HT-29 cells. RESULTS Lectin histochemical staining confirmed stronger staining with PNA, which labeled Galβ1, 3 GalNAc (core 1 structure) in HT-29-Gal-OBN and C2GnT2-sh2/HT-29 cells, compared with control...

Allele- and Tir-Independent Functions of Intimin in Diverse Animal Infection Models

Upon binding to intestinal epithelial cells, enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC), enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC), and Citrobacter rodentium trigger formation of actin pedestals beneath bound bacteria. Pedestal formation has been associated with enhanced colonization, and requires intimin, an adhesin that binds to the bacterial effector translocated intimin receptor (Tir), which is transl...

Polymorphisms within EspA filaments of enteropathogenic and enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli.

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) and enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) possess a filamentous type III secretion system (TTSS) employed to deliver effector proteins into host cells. EspA is a type III secreted protein which forms the filamentous extension to the TTSS and which interacts with host cells during early stages of attaching and effacing (A/E) lesion formation. By immunofluoresc...
